Philanthropic Service

For more than a century, Pi Beta Phi has committed to create a more literate and productive society. We’ve changed with the times, but never shifted our vision. Our Club is committed to giving back to the community through philanthropic service, while having fun in the process. The following are some of the specific literacy projects we participate in during the year in our communities:

CHAMPIONS ARE READERS ® (CAR)Our premier literacy program: 20 years of reading with 3rd grade students at Aikin Elementary in Richardson ISD. No experience needed - only a listening ear and a tender heart! During the month of February, Club Members read with students twice a week to enable them to become better readers. At the end of the reading sessions, Club members plan a celebration to recognize those students who completed the reading sessions.

FDS 500 BOOK GRANTSWe select an elementary school in our community that could benefit from a book grant so their students can have new books to take home. Club members work with the school staff to complete the book grant application and select the books. Then we work with the teachers to plan a fun event to distribute the books to their students.

TEXAS SCOTTISH RITE HOSPITAL TREE DECORATINGFor more than 30 years our Club has been decorating a tree for the children at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, TX. This is a once-a-year event at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospitals in Dallas and Frisco. Members decorate a tree with our Club’s angel ornaments for the enjoyment of patients and staff.

In recent years, the club has conducted Fraternity Day of Service events supporting Read > Lead > Achieve®, including book drives, book giveaways and hosting a Fraternity Day of Service Signature Event in 2017.

The club has also given an outstanding sophomore award for over 40 years! The award is for a sophomore member of a Pi Beta Phi chapter in Texas who exhibits qualities of scholarship, fraternity service, campus and community activities, leadership and character. This award is named in honor of the club’s own former Grand Council member and Richardson, Texas, resident Carolyn Pavletich Lesh, Texas Delta. It is presented each April during the club’s Founders' Day celebration. The recipient receives an engraved silver traveling tray for her chapter to display and an engraved mint julep cup for her to keep in remembrance of this award.
